1. BEFRAG Injector Identification
Identify the BEFRAG product by engine series first, then confirm the exact reference. The table below maps every Caterpillar engine family we cover to its BEFRAG series, its injection type and the components supplied for it.
| Engine Series | BEFRAG Series | Injection Type | What We Supply |
|---|---|---|---|
| CAT C6.4 / C6.6 / C9.3 | C6.4 Series | Common Rail | 320D pump parts |
| CAT C7 / C9 / C-9 | C7/C9/C-9 Series | HEUI | HEUI injectors & internals |
| CAT C10–C18 / 3406E | C13-C18 Series | EUI | EUI nozzles |
| CAT C13E / C15E / C27E / C32E | C13-C32 E Series | E-series | E-series nozzles |
| CAT 3500B–3516E | 3500 Series | EUI / MUI | EUI & MUI capsule nozzles |
| CAT 3126B | 3126B Series | HEUI | HEUI injectors & solenoids |
| CAT 3408E–3412E | 3408E-3412E Series | Legacy V8 / V12 | Industrial & marine range — full list in the PDF reference |
| CAT C175 | C175 Series | Common Rail | Nozzles & control valves |
Cannot match the series? Send the BEFRAG part number stamped on the injector body, or a photo of the body and batch label — we confirm the series, the OEM cross-reference and the correct replacement within 24 hours. The full matrix is in the BEFRAG Number Reference (PDF).
2. BEFRAG Nozzle Installation
Most nozzle comebacks trace back to cleanliness or seat condition rather than the nozzle itself. Work through the three stages below in order.
Pre-installation checks
- Verify the BEFRAG part number against the OEM reference before the injector is opened.
- Inspect the nozzle seat for carbon buildup — a ridge left in the seat holds the nozzle off its face.
- Check copper washer thickness against the engine specification; a crushed or wrong-thickness washer changes nozzle protrusion.
Installation steps
- Clean the nozzle bore and seat.
- Install a new copper washer and O-ring.
- Lubricate with clean diesel.
- Torque to engine manufacturer specification.
- Check for compression leaks.
Common failures
Spray pattern distortion
Dirt on the seat or a damaged tip. Compare the spray pattern against a known-good nozzle on the test bench before fitting.
Nozzle dripping
The needle no longer seals on its seat, usually from contamination during assembly. Re-check cleanliness and replace the nozzle.
Low flow rate
A worn needle and seat, or the wrong nozzle class fitted. Measure flow on the bench rather than judging from engine behaviour.
3. BEFRAG Control Valve Installation
The control valve is the most contamination-sensitive part of the injector. Keep it clean and never reuse the seals.
Pre-installation checks
- Verify the part number against the OEM reference.
- Check the valve bore for scoring — a scored bore will destroy a new valve.
- Measure solenoid resistance and record the reading.
Installation steps
- Clean the valve bore.
- Lubricate with clean diesel.
- Do not reuse old seals.
- Torque to specification.
- Confirm solenoid resistance after installation.
Common failures
Valve sticking
Particle contamination in the bore. Clean the valve bore and replace the fuel filter.
Internal leakage
Wear or scoring between spool and bore, which shows up as excessive back leakage. Test leak-off before condemning the injector.
Solenoid failure
An open or shorted coil. Measure resistance before and after installation.
4. BEFRAG Solenoid Diagnostics
Two checks settle most solenoid faults: the coil itself, and the circuit feeding it.
Resistance check
- Measure coil resistance with a multimeter.
- Compare the reading against the BEFRAG specification.
- Replace if out of range.
Connector check
- Confirm the pin layout.
- Check for corrosion or bent pins.
- Verify the signal from the ECU.
Common failures
Open circuit
No continuity through the coil — usually a broken winding or a failed connector crimp.
Short circuit
Resistance far below specification. Check the harness as well as the coil before replacing.
Weak magnetic force
The coil reads correctly but the valve does not actuate. Check the ECU signal and the valve bore before replacing anything.
5. BEFRAG Troubleshooting Matrix
Start from the symptom the driver reports, then work the diagnostic action. Confirm the BEFRAG part number before replacing any component.
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Diagnostic Action |
|---|---|---|
| Engine misfire | Faulty injector or nozzle | Check BEFRAG part number, replace |
| Rough idle | Control valve sticking | Clean or replace control valve |
| Hard start | Excessive back leakage | Test injector back leakage |
| White smoke | Nozzle spray pattern issue | Replace nozzle |
| No start | Solenoid failure | Check solenoid resistance |
| Low power | Low fuel flow rate | Check nozzle flow and pump pressure |
| Black smoke | Over-fueling | Check control valve and ECU signal |
